Texas winter storm home checklist: what homeowners should do before freezing temperatures
Freezing temperatures in Central Texas can cause serious (and expensive) damage if homes aren’t prepared. Whether you’re a homeowner, landlord or future buyer, this checklist covers the most important steps to protect your property during winter storms.
Power and devices
- Fully charge phones, tablets, laptops and battery packs.
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries where you can reach them.
- Set thermostats to at least 68°F, even if you leave home.
- Know where your electrical panel is.
Plumbing and water
- Cover all exterior faucets with insulated covers.
- Drip faucets during extended freezes, especially on exterior walls.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can circulate.
- Know how to shut off your main water valve.
Protect the house
- Seal drafts around doors and windows.
- Close garage doors tightly.
- Move plants indoors or cover outdoor landscaping.
- Check attic insulation and exposed piping if you can get to them.
Safety and supplies
- Keep bottled water on hand.
- Stock non-perishable food and basic medications.
- Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work.
- Never run generators or grills indoors.
Why this matters
After the 2021 winter storm, a lot of homeowners learned the hard way that frozen pipes, power loss and unprepared homes can mean tens of thousands of dollars in damage. A little preparation now can prevent major problems later.
